poem

Two year old chocolate.
The taste of old sugar,
And fatty oils gone bad.

Something sweet that still tastes sweet
And yet still has the taste of something
That will not last forever.

A memory of a past life.
Something sweet I once used to live
Dug up out of the sock drawer

Found buried with a bunch of jelly bellies
That are now cold rocks of corn syrup
And mints that won't ever freshen a mouth.

Who gave me that chocolate?
And why did everything go stale?
And when sugar goes bad, where does that sweet taste go?

Does it still deserve an attempt at enjoying it?
Do I eat it for old times' sake?
Or throw it out and forget the memory ever existed?
