Ok... so a really bad thing happened today. My teacher was talking about Corneille (a French playwright in the Renaissance) and about how he was offended when the French Academy didn't like his play, so he stopped writing for three years. Discussion turned to honor, and how anybody back then was willing to fight each other or die for the sake of honor, and about how there was less of that in the United States, even back then. "However," Letwin continued, "There was one famous duel in the States, can anyone tell me who was involved?"
Ok so the bad thing that happened was this... testament either to my lack of knowledge of US history, or to the fact that I'm obsessed with the 19th century western American frontier history... the first thing that popped into my head was the gunfight at the OK Corral between the Earp brothers, Doc Holliday, and the Clantons and McLaurys. Thank goodness I kept my cowgirl mouth shut. The real answer is the duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr that happened 77 years before that...
At any rate, I felt compelled to share that with whoever cares... and if blogger would let me insert aim smiley faces, I would at this point insert :-[ that one. Try it in aim, you'll see the rosey cheeks...
